105.9 KISS FM
While studying journalism at the University of Kansas, I worked as a Broadcast Programming Intern at 105.9 KISS FM, part of Great Plains Media in Lawrence, Kansas. During the internship, I supported the station’s programming and production teams, contributing to both on-air and behind-the-scenes operations. My role involved a mix of research, content creation, and audio production — all focused on helping deliver engaging, well-executed broadcasts.
Great Plains Media operates three stations — 105.9 KISS FM, 92.9 THE BULL, and 101.7 FM/AM 1320 KLWN — serving listeners across Lawrence, Topeka, and Kansas City.
What I Did as an Intern
Show Preparation
Assisted with daily show prep by researching artists and songs in the station’s music log to develop timely discussion topics and enhance on-air flow during live broadcasts.
On-Air Promotions
Created promotional segments and transitional audio elements aired between songs and commercials, using both live production and the station’s digital broadcasting software.
Voiceover Production
Recorded voiceover tracks for commercials and promotional spots that aired across all three Great Plains Media stations, applying vocal direction and editing techniques to match brand tone and pacing.
Music Research & Analysis
Conducted a semester-long research project analyzing artists and playlists from comparable stations nationwide. Compiled findings into a data report used by station leadership to evaluate KISS FM’s programming strategy.
“Beat Mixes”
I regularly produced “beat mixes” — short, high-energy compilations of trending Billboard Top 100 songs that played between tracks and during commercial breaks. Each mix concluded with the station’s signature KISS FM tagline, creating smooth transitions throughout the broadcast.

On-air advertisements
I recorded on-air advertisements for local businesses throughout the Lawrence area, aligning each spot with the station’s tone and audience.

And you’re listening to…
Part of the magic of radio is keeping the energy alive between songs. During my time at KISS FM, I worked on crafting seamless transitions that carried listeners from one hit to the next without missing a beat. A few of those transitions are featured to the right.
